I paid so much for my books this semester! I hate seeing my money going away for these necessities that ultimately become pillows when I fall asleep on them- and they are way too hard. The worst thing that happened though is that I brought all my text books back to school to sell them to incoming freshman and now the professors are requiring new editions so no one would buy them! Thanks a lot! I put them on eCampus and apparently some other schools are still behind the times because they sold- for less than I paid, but whatever.. now I can look at my new sweater instead of my calculus book.

So I have been working for a month and a half now and I am starting to get the hang of it. Sadly, as this is an internship, once you get the hang of it, you know it's almost time to leave. I have made some pals out of the coworkers and some contacts out of the bossmen. Plus, I saw how much drinking and golfing I can look forward to if I become a lawyer... and a man I guess.
Some tips I have gathered from this experience:
1. Dress impeccably the first day, but then start to blend with what everyone else is wearing. You want to look like you are eager to do the work, but not like you still have the energy to spend too much time on hair and makeup. Plus, you can't tip the balance of the office with your out of norm dress code.
2. Make friends with the receptionist. She/he knows everyone and everything and is generally the most amiable personality. Plus, if you are on good terms, then you can get all the best tips.
3. Know how to make good coffee before you even set foot in the office. Just trust me on this one.
4. Dont eat to many of the office snacks. This one is just for the benefit of your waste line, but also, the more you are seen snacking, the less it looks like you are working
5. If you don't know how to do something, ask and clarify. Its always better than doing something wrong. On the other hand, if its something that doesn't matter if you get it slightly wrong, go for it on your own rather than bothering the boss with trivialities. Furthermore, you should ask different people every time you need to be shown how to do something unless you can zone in on someone who really loves to help and knows what s/he's doing because that way you are spreading the annoyance around thinly.
6 Answering phones sucks. try to learn everyone's names and give a sparkly "good morning" unless of course it's the afternoon.

So... summer goal is to learn chinese. I decided this just now because I am starting to get freaked out about our economy. I am reading this book called The Wealth and Poverty of Nations and it summarizes a lot of the risings and fallings of different great kingdoms, empires, nations etc. It seems way too easy and too fickle. So yeah... Chinese= backup plan. And hey, if the world continues to go on as it is now... then atleast I can barter better when I travel through China and I can make sure I get the honest opinion of waiters at Chinese restaurants.

The thing is that you do always have to have jeans of varying prices and varying materials. There are some that are for every day fun. They get stretched & they get beat up. There are also occasions where you want to look really nice, but you don't want to look like you tried to hard. Expensive jeans are just the thing. They fit in all the right places and they just have that obvious quality that others don't.
I am not going to argue in terms of comfort that price makes that big a difference, but as much as I love my H&M jeans, I break out by Genetic Denim when I know I am going to be seen by that cute guy in my Spanish class.

Along the same line, I want to recommend making carrot muffins with flax and cinnamon. I make them all the time and you don't even need to add more than a table spoon or so of brown sugar. I make the recipe up as I go and I don't think I have gotten the ratio down yet (when I do, I will post it) It requires: flour, ground flax seed, carrots, eggs, cinnamon, salt, slight sugar, walnuts. They are nutritious and delicious!

I have to start planning for the summer once more. I got an email back about one of the internships I applied to requesting phone interview, but then sadly they emailed me the day of the scheduled interview to say that they had already filled the position. The worst part is that I still have no job experience so I probably won't even be able to get a job busting tables. Woe is me. Atleast I will have the freedom to travel, I suppose. There is the teensy issue of money always, but what's a couple hundred in the face of my super gigantic college tuition? anway, I have finals to stress me out, the summer is supposed to be for fun and sun.... right?

Makeup Minerals

So, of course as I am on my way to through the teen year exit, my skin still retains its acne prone obsession. The good news is that I am at that age where a ton of makeup isn't necessarily out of the norm, but it certainly can be tedious to apply and expensive. I started with the whole "minerals" craze after I used a friends makeup before a dance in high school. To be honest, I have never looked back because liquid foundation always felt like it was suffocating my face. Also, because its a new idea, every minerals company seems to give out free samples and these samples actually last a long time. I say, "milk it!" You can simultaneously find the brand that is right for you and stock up on some free cover-up. I recommend starting with the Colour Correcting Foundation Primer in Green from pur minerals. This one specifically gets rid of red skin from acne as well as less common conditions such as rosacea. If you don't need that much help, just go for one of the simple lines.
I break out less using the mineral line than I do with my earlier liquid stuff, but sometimes it does make my face itchy or make me sneeze.
I seem to be allergic to one of the minerals that happens to be in the Bare Minerals collection so that's why I started branching out to begin with. Its always a good idea to check out all your options.

It's officially Spring and my tan lines are very aware of this fact. After a good week of sun, I have the mst awesome tan lines from my flats. Obviously, I need to break out the sandals, but alas... I left all my non winter wardrobe at home. Luckily, this means that a new pair of strappy sandals is totally justified- and there is no shoe better to avoid obvious tan tines than a good pair of Gladiators. Personally, I think the criss-cross pattern it makes on my foot is kinda cool.

So, I am a woman of expensive tastes- well usually. I mean I love In-N-Out burger and hand-me-downs, but these are things that are inexpensive, not "cheap". I realized when I went to college, that my love of gourmet things and new leather smell would go unsatisfied for a while. There just isn't enough money to pay tuition and go on shopping sprees. I have recently come across some ways to help my self walk the fine line. These are my faves- hope you enjoy...

1 Restaurant.com --- Sign up for their emails and they will send you secret codes nearly every day that let you get $25 gift cards for as little as $2. Make sure you always read the fine print and check the menu prices and reviews. I have used 4 of these recently. One had horrible food! The rest had amazing food for prices that would have been unaffordable. With the coupon, I paid less than I would have in my dining hall. If you are ever in New York, get the coupon for Seven's Turkish food on 72nd street.

2. Groupon- A lot of the things they sell on groupon are overindulgent such as $5o tins of gourmet popcorn. The only way I can afford that is if its 90% off. However, there are some interesting deals as well. This year I bought a haircut, groceries from an organic store and 3 restaurant deals all for 50% off or slightly more. Since they send you a deal every day, its easy to stay informed and wait for a deal that actually speaks to you. Always think, " Is this something I have been looking for, but the money was holding me back?"

3. DailyCandy.com -- In my opinion this is definitely geared toward people with more money, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a ton of stuff on it that I can enjoy. It is a great way to hear about things going on in the city. I just recently went to an art show on their advice. Sipping free wine amongst intellectuals, portraits and landscapes isn't so bad. Also a good way to find out about sample sales!

4. Inside New York- iny.com ---- A review book gone .com, this website gives current reviews on everything from huge museum exhibits to the best and cheapest curry restaurant. The best thing is that all the contributors are starving students themselves so everything that is on there is totally affordable. I just recently went to a restaurant called By the Ounce on their recommendation and had the best fondue of my life!

These are really cute and now that I am in college and practically packed away my entire room before I left, I am much more nostalgic than I used to be. Hamlet and Homecoming

Its Homecoming weekend so everyone is breaking out the customized T-shirts. Sadly, they aren't all that fabulous...
I went to see Jude Law's Hamlet on Broadway the other night. It was very long, but the effects were great. Hamlet was never really my favorite, but Jude Law definitely kept him full of action instead of just soliloquy. Sadly, this was at the expense of the other characters who were blander than white rice. All in All it was worth seeing though.
I hope I can say the same for the Homecoming football game, although the weather certainly isn't going to make it easy...

Ahhhh. SO I had to drop my math class and go into a lower level which means I have to buy a new math book and now what do I do with the old one??
luckily Ecampus sells books for cheap and they buy back the books that you need to get rid of. SO even if you really hated your calc class- KEEP the book and don't burn it. That's money in the bank right there.
Still, its kind of a hassle and there is always the old fashioned way of putting of flyers, but then you actually have to deal with people. My advice is to do both and see which gets you more money. Duh!

Okay... to be honest I am a little creeped out by this, which is weird because that's basically what facebook is. Except, I guess with Facebook, that person knows that he/she is being looked up and even puts up pictures for you to see and gives you updates on exactly where he/she is. So, I guess that whomever you are trying to find doesn't have a facebook and is therefore not even worth finding. Just kidding of course. One thing that is kind of useful about things like these is that you can get background checks which is useful for you if you want to get a job because you know what people will know about you and also if you want to hire someone like a maid or a babysitter and you don't want some weirdo in your house. Halloween-- For all people who aren't kids or don't have kids, this is a time to dress up as slutty as possible or as creatively as possible and preferably both. For those who have money to spend and no creative thoughts- no fear! you can buy a costume. The ones on clearance are between 20 and $30 which isn't so bad and if you and your friends buy them together you can save on shipping. I think that College is great and everything, but now is of course the time start looking toward the future in terms of breaks as well if you want to find good deals for getting home. I have been using bare minerals for a while now, but of course I have been using it more often recently since I am in college and want to go out more often and the nights are longer. The makeup is therefore more often on my face and I have realized that this makes my face a little sensitive and really makes me break out. Bare minerals is really amazing in how much it covers though and it looks really natural if you have the right shade. I did some research and found out that bare minerals has something called bismuth oxychloride. This could be propaganda or wild speculation, but some links said that this was an allergen to some people and I figured maybe this is what was irritating my skin. I haven't been wearing it for a day and a half now and my skin is definitely feeling better, but it hasn't completely healed yet. One thing that was recommended is Everyday minerals which apparently does not contain the same minerals. I went to their website and they sent me a free sample (I paid the $2.80 shipping fee, but not bad).
It will arrive in a couple days so hopefully I will have an update then.

Coach is the middle class or modest version of the big designers like Fendi and Prada. It is a respectable, nice and sturdy brand and one of my personal favorites. I love sushi and its pretty good for you. Thus, I have been eating it quite a lot recently because there is a cafe where I can get it pretty cheap. In reality, if you can eat one roll for lunch, then costs about the same as a sandwhich. Its also a fun study food because I can easily eat it on my bed surrounded by my books. This post is really just an homage to Sushi, btws. Here is my top list of sushi:

1. Salmon roll. Salmon is one of the fattier fish, but that's why it tastes so amazing. Its still healthy and all and not as bad as some. Besides tuna, I would say its the most mainstream (no pun intended)

2. Unagi- Eel on rice is definitely a delectable treat. It does have a sauce that isn't that good for you since I think there's actually some sugar involved. This one's not a staple, but when I am ordering a couple things, this is definitely one of them.

3. Scallop Roll- Very good. Scallops are very healthy and very pricey, but the sauce that is sometimes served with them can't be healthy. (cuz it tastes tooo goood)

4. California Roll- when you want a little bit of everything, aren't feeling adventurous and are on a budget.

5. Yellow Tail, Tuna, Albacore- and the like.... These always blend together in my mind. Theoretically, I know which one is which, but while I am eating, I don't really discriminate. They are all good. (I think I am a little more particular to the Yellow Tail)

6. Spider Roll- this is last only because its the most expensive and kind of a cheating roll because it has soft shell crab and is much bigger. This one is to-die-for. If you have never had it, get on that!

Still kind of too expensive for me, but God do I love looking at designer things I can almost afford. I can also ask for these for presents, or if I save up enough get them as a present to myself. I love the Gap and I love cords. There's not really much more to say. Some places use weird material, but the reason Gap is so great is because all their clothes are relatively simple and can be counted on to be comfy. Hey, I actually think Guitar Hero is really fun now. I used to make fun of it, but I guess sometimes you don't get something until you try it for yourself. A couple weeks ago, my mother sent me to the store to get things for dinner. She gave me her debit card since we have been lowering the spending with credit cards and I was off. I bought some things at Trader Joes, but needed to go to Rite Aid and Vons as well. In total, I didn't spend over $35, but what was shocking was that when she checked her balance, she realized that her check had not yet cleared and soon we saw the overdraw charges rolling in. So, for 3 overdraw charges ($34 each transaction) I ended up spending 4 times the amount that I wanted to. I was shocked; no credit card even has fees that high and a debit card is supposed to be for the responsible ones. We are all suffering right now and many people are overdrawing which is why I felt so connected with this story:

I couldn't believe that banks were making $27 billion dollars off of the pain of all the tax payers that already used their money to bail them out. WTF?
No wonder many financial institutes reported glorious earnings. Whatever doesn't make a bank fail makes it stronger I guess...
My solution to all of this? Its actually very hard to find one. I thought debit cards were the solution for huge fees on college students, but I guess now the only thing to do is to sleep with money under my pillow to save myself the trouble. Or, check your ballance often and if you see you have under $100, do not use your card! borrow money from friends and make sure you return it, or don't spend at all. DO NOT GIVE BANKS YOUR MONEY IN ANNOYING FEES.

College begins for real

So far, what has been my opinion of college classes?
Its a lot more laid back than high school was since classes start later and even though they run longer, it is more interesting than tedious.
The lectures can be interesting. Lectures have a bad rep, but if you actually manage to listen you realize that the speaker may be a Genius!
There are way too many fliers in general. You'd think that these "green students" would want to save paper... but then why is there so much advertising & litter?
Its harder to meet friends in class. The teacher does most of the talking and you need to pay attention to every word.
The books are EXPENSIVE! if you are in a state of flux about your classes then it is also hard to look for the good deals.
No matter how much you packed, you always forget your school supplies.
I always want to sleep between classes.

YAY. I can't believe how expensive they have gotten. You can hardly find a fridge anywhere for under $100 and we have realized that its pretty necessary because our dining hall has weird hours and we have been losing weight right and left. You think it sounds great, but I actually don't like not eating thank you very much.

On a side note. Today, I went to New York City, which is close to my college hint hint. A few friends of mine and I decided to check out the MOMA and I fell in love with a painting that I will post later because my camera right now is not working. From there, they went to the flea market and I proceeded to walk a little more than o 20 blocks down to the mall because I had some things to return. One store I needed to get my money back from was Aeropostale. I really didn't like their jeans and opted instead for a darker H&M pair. Aeropostale was miserable. I had to wait in line for over 30 minutes. no joke! it sucked. There were so many people in their grabbing and standing and shouting. I never was in one before and I am never going back. I also went to the GAP, which I love because they have comfy clothes, and bought some shirts and a skirt. My favorite part of the day was the walk. There were so many things to see and feel and hear. The smelling part was both good and bad because sometimes there were trash bags on the streets and sometimes the smell of candied almonds wafted from street vendors. I always enjoy walking by myself because I really enjoy it more and I can do everything on my will. I don't really enjoy eating by myself though so I had to take the subway back and find my friends. Yeah, so that's it.

packing for college is ridiculous. I want to leave my old life behind kind of and instead I have to schlep half my life across the country. I found that free shipping and buying new things on the internet at least saves me from the pain of shopping for a lot once I get there. On the provided list from the University, I saw that it said I would need a backpack next year. This surprised me because I turned in my backpack for a LL Bean tote my sophomore year. Do I return to a backpack now? I did like the backpack more in terms of carrying it long distances. My shoulder hurt after extended periods and their were fewer compartments for my pencils etc.

When I lived in Santa Cruz, we lived in this two story house at the top of one of the notoriously steep roads. The floors were completely hard wood floors and together with the foggy chill that is coastal weather the house had a continual draft. To combat this, we had at least 8 huge rugs. Feeling nostalgic and scared of east coast weather I went looking for a persian rug like the ones we used to have. I have about a week before I head off and am now starting to accept the fact that I am leaving. I had a weird dream last night that included my high school class in a weird swirl of bonfire and sky. The dream morphed into a Van Gogh like night crisp with East Coast autumn and a kind of business and excitement. In the cheesiest way possible, I thought , "so begins my life"
Everything up to this point has been safe and really, not that much in my control. Now, it really is sink or swim. Even more difficult is that I have to jump right in, which doesn't really fit with my metaphor or my natural instinct. It seems unwise to jump right into water you don't know anything about, and yet it is the best way to acclimate yourself with the college experience.
I am hoping that I can make friends, get the classes I like, enjoy the experience, all with a minimal amount of stress. In reality, I know that I am going to be stressing about the itineraries, over analyzing first impressions and probably questioning myself more than I care to admit. In the end, everything will kind of squish together into a lull and then I will know that I have finally arrived; acceptance has finally come.
Until then, I find solace in lists and lists. Whether I follow them or not, they make me feel like I am not hurtling into the depths. CANON BALL!!!!

I was emailed this promotion, after having had the most luxurious sandals vacation ever in Jamaica a year ago, for a great deal to go back.

I wanted to do a review of this trip because it was a nonstop ride of indulgence, adventure and relaxation. Everything I did, from exploring the waters of Jamaica with the lobsters and fish (watch out for night time jellyfish oh my! they kind of itch) to zip lining across the forest canopy to ordering a succulent rack of lamb from a menu with no prices, created a vivid dream for me. For 90 hours, I was princess of a utopia. I kind of expected something that is all inclusive to offer the lowest quality things in order to make a great profit, but this wasn't the case for this family business. We enjoyed the very best in every department and Jamaica itself, even if I had been staying in a shanty, would have been a magical place. When it pours, you may not even try to get out of the rain. Its a warm shower that makes the green around you all the more lush. The weather was fairly warm and mild and I went in November. When I landed in lake Tahoe on the way home, it was Snowing!
Of course to every positive review there has to be a negative... My only chagrin was that I couldn't explore Jamaica to the full extent I wanted, but this was less a fault of the resort( which offers shuttles and cars) than of the safety issue. Also, of course the price of this resort may glare one in the face. A bill that you pay up front and that you know the amount of is much better than the hundreds of times you shell out during a regular vacation. Don't get me wrong, when I am vacationing in Europe, we fly over there, get a car and see as much as possible, the hotel isn't important and we are usually kind of exhausted a lot. That's one type of vacation and this is the purely recreational kind- don't expect to learn anything except phrases like "AIRE" and "no problem" and the culture of Jamaica.
Anyway, my point is that just thinking of this vacation makes my stress lessen and puts a smile on my face.

So, after another shopping spree at Urban Outfitters in Santa Monica the other day and buying my plane ticket as well as some much needed dorm things, I am very near broke.
Even worse, since I have turned 18, I have become acutely aware of how it isn't my age that gives my parents control over me, nor is it their somewhat diluted blood running through my veins. In fact, it is something that seems omnipresent and yet ever elusive: Money. Arguing with my mother is futile; I may as well be a child. This feeling of impotence is precisely why I didn't blanch at my father's suggestion of taking out a student loan. Student loans are far from ideal of course, but they don't have to be the equivalent of selling your soul, especially not if you pay attention to APR.
Here are some key things for anyone who every plans to borrow money:

1. Fixed APR is very important! If you get a non fixed rate then the company could give you a really low rate and then hike the interest as inflation hits. You could be stuck paying up to 30% interest! that is unacceptable and you never want to be in a position like that.

2. If you are responsible and can put down collateral such as your parent's house then you can get a much better loan-- even a student loan. A lot of these loans that you can apply for are only under your name, which sure is great because you get to keep your parents out of your money, but it might be worth it for a signature if you save thousands.

3. If you have any ties with other countries, pay attention to exchange rates. Because I have two bank accounts, moving money and traveling is all a matter of timing. This isn't fishy! I am not talking about hiding money or off shore accounts. I am just saying that diversifying (if you do not have to pull the money out in a rush) is a key element in security. Some money in $$$$, some in real estate, education as an investment, maybe some gold and why not exchange that dollar for yen or euros if you are weary of where our country is headed?

4. Don't throw away money. Every year millions of people forget to claim their rebates, tax deductions and even throw away gift cards. I have been doing a lot of doubting recently because every so called report from fashion to news to health sounds completely ridiculous and it has made me question the very worth of all this free information we have via the internet. GASP.

Here are some stories that I hope you will find as shocking and appalling as I have:

Princeton educated and gorgeous Michelle Obama makes me want to go read Shakespeare on the Treadmill so I do not understand how men could come up with the excuse that they don't want to be like their perfect leader. maybe its a "I can never be him so I should quit trying approach" or they think the country is in such good hands and they are showing solidarity for his health care plan. I have no idea, but I do not think that George Bush inspired men to read War and Peace or go for a jog and rather un-fit Cheney certainly did not inspire men to go for strolls in the woods. This article is Yahoo's most inane. it earns 4 WTF's!

Not only is Harvard liscencing every phrase it uses, has used or may like to use, but they have come up with their own mass marketed clothing line. I was first appalled hearing they owned "Lessons learned", "Havahd", "H" and "The world’s thinking.’’ because cmon... you can't trademark a letter can you? and trademarking the more pretentious way of saying your school's name- seriously? not to mention the most self-important phrases that exist. I know that Capitalist education is one of the proudest cornerstones of this country, but wow. p/s the clothing line is all shorts and loafers. this gets 3.5 WTF's!

3. The last thing is kind of a more general commentary on a major flaw with our culture. While browsing the news I come across many complaints of the obesity epidemic and many new drugs or quick fix solutions. One I encountered recently was some magic dust that you sprinkle on your food so that you feel fuller and more satisfied. On the same page I saw a link to watch the local funnel cake eating contest. I love funnel cake, but it is a delicacy and not something that should be wolfed down. It should be savored and enjoyed... especially because each one sets you back half a day of calories. Why people think that eating is a sport is beyond me. Eating has evolved to become our most complicated and seemingly most dangerous human task. It's what keeps us alive and it is our natural instinct to think about it, but we claim to have brains that are much higher functioning than apes. so prove it! 4 WTF's

Okay, so it is true... this awesome video is a fake, but that doesn't mean it is any less awesome. I mean, someone had to come up with this and if anything this just proves that we are in an awesome age. Hundreds of years ago people actually did bizarre and dangerous stunts to entertain themselves, now we have computers do them for us. I am extra happy because A) the people who did this were German and it is great to see the fatherland accomplish anything these days as German engineering is starting to mean less and less with the Chinese, Japanese and Indians around. B) It's a Microsoft ad and I am so sick of Apple smugness. :P
Seriously, all of my childhood I have grown up in schools that only had Macs and been very confused and annoyed by there weirdness. I accept that they have many features of awesomeness, but why can't they just leave us PCs alone? always with the personal attacks.
I did cave and buy and Ipod and thus I now use Itunes, but that's as far as the Imadness goes for me. I like my crappy virus infested Dells. what can I say? I have never been a fan of the fru fru and this is what I consider Macs. They are round when I like square. I like control-alt-delete and I like my little windows flag.

Scuba Duba Diving

I went scuba diving today. SOOOO much fun. I thought I would be totally uncomfortable and cold since I went to Anacapa Island to swim in the reefs, but with the wet suit in August I felt very warm. There was also a Jacuzzi on board that was amazing. Peeling off the wet suit and hopping in is in itself a wonderful feeling. I loved swimming with the sea lions. They are friendlyand playful and it is so interesting to see them in their natural environment. I think they feel really awkward on land, but in the water they are wonderful hosts.
There is this huge pin and blue fish that totally stalked me and it turns out it is known as the SheepsHead. What also surprised me was how amazing the kelp looked rising up to the surface like a forest around me.
I can't wait to try out new places, especially the Caribbean and off the coast of Asia. It is really awesome to do with friends, but underwater is always a good place to clear your head and think in some peace and quiet as you drift with the current over anenomes, lobsters, coral, crabs, and brightly colored plants.

My topic for today is computer photo albums. I myself have actually never made one but a friend showed me the one she made and I thought it was beautiful. She made hers for a friend's birthday present and it was a great surprise. I have been looking into it and they aren't that expensive, but it is hard to choose which software to use.

I have divorced parents and it usually is fine and occasionally even great. Sometimes it is really frustrating though because it can be difficult to deal with one of them and they have these bizarre feelings about each other. Worse is when I get assigned double chores. For instance, my brother and I hadn't been to my mom's house in a month and then we went over to her house for a weekend to use the faster internet and then we get an email saying that the house is a mess and we have some nerve. The only problem is that we most certainly did NOT make a mess right? Apparently, my step dad, who had been living the bachelor life totally blamed us for the mess >:(

So what do I do? Normally if my mom was here I would try to argue my way out of trouble, it would back fire and make her mad. Then, I would spend the next couple hours cleaning and scrubbing, but I wouldn't do a good enough job and then my mom would be mad for another two hours until she lost interest and wanted me to make dinner.
Instead today, I tried it a different way. I blackmailed my brother, who needed a ride and told him he would hve to clean before I took him anywhere. Normally, he hates to do anything resembling work, but Voila! the house is clean. :)
p/s don't feel bad for him. he is 16 and 6'3" and he still makes me make him lunch.

I'm getting pretty excited for college to start now... you know its just that lull where summer's luster begins to fade. I have been thinking of going to Magic Mountain, but other than that no major plans right now to entertain myself.
It also turns out that I am terrible at Guitar hero. I kind of wish DDR was still in style instead. Just when I got the hang of that game, it left the scene. Plus, DDR makes me feel a lot more active because at least I am dancing (using that word liberally) instead of just clicking buttons.
I guess I don't really have that much to say and am just typing out of boredom. Which means I am very close to entering into the black hole of things like googling people and photoshopping.
To curb my boredom I have been doing one productive thing- reading Obama's autobiography in which he talks about inheritance and race. It is pretty strange to read the thoughts on white and black from the President. Also weird to hear him talk about experimentation with drugs and his ambition. At many points, I realize that he wasn't always and arrugula eater and when caught off guard like when he remarked that the police acted stupidly concerning Gates, he reacts like the little kid who was acutely aware of his black skin. A leopard can't change his spots and all that. Its not really that big a deal because we have enough checks and ballances that one point of view can only add to our perspective. I definitely can say after reading this book though, that I have no idea what its like to be anything but a white middle class girl. Anyway, back to the book...
Mostly, when I am reading it, although it is beautifully written, it makes me feel that it is such a random trick of fate that he is destined for greatness. When reading about his everyday encounters, I think, "that man is giving a life lesson to the future Mr. President."
Weird!
His listless drifting for a large part of the book makes me marvel at how someone's calling may spring up so suddenly. I guess everyone feels the same looking outward from their skin.

The daily show ruined the Media ruined the News

I've been very bad in the last few- all right all my life- about getting the news from so called reliable sources. Its not really my fault though because I just like the news so much better when its funny. That's why I watch the Daily Show and the Colbert Report and to be honest I never feel like I am missing anything. I do read the occasional Economist, New York Times and Newsweek, but I can't stand to watch some of the other news stations. Comedy central news shows me all the clips from important news items that seem ridiculous and I've seen so much that it makes me feel like all news stations report on every day is ridiculous. Otherwise, John Stewart's and Steven Colbert's jobs wouldn't be so easy and so...daily.
The recent episode I was watching for instance put the new health care reforms in terms I could understand while showing how the media had dramatized the plan. It is easier for me to understand genuine sarcasm than it is misleading breaking news.
I think the show also approaches ethical questions and deep issues that are more thematic than current, but just as relevant. The daily show doesn't try to impress with dramatic music, grave facial expressions and horrifying footage.
Anyway, before I continue gushing (because that's what I realized I am doing, instead of what I meant to do- analytically defending my generations news choice) I would just like to say that at least I know what's going on every day (or atleast 4 days a week). There are plenty of people who don't watch anything and though they are saved from propaganda, they will remain uninformed.

I had a great time in San Francisco. The friend I was staying with took me to the heart of SF shopping, China town and some interesting museums. Pretty much everywhere we went was free either because she was a member or because the museum was government subsidized. I think its always good to look for what you can do as a tourist without spending money.
We even went to see the Bay Model, which is a pretty interesting thing. The main feature is a warehouse size recreation of the entire bay. You can walk from oakland to Sonoma and check out the size of the pacific ocean. It is kind of bizarre. The whole thing takes less than a half an hour to see, but we stayed about an hour because, to be honest, we were messing around a little and stopped to check out the amazing artwork in the Lobby.
My favorites attraction in Marin was the Sunday morning farmer's market. It is under a building where they filmed part of the old starwars movie-- and you can really tell from the arched butress type things framing the porthole like windows. The farmer's market was HUGE. It had everything from rose water to peaches, to pastries, to pizza, to huge carrots and even a bouncer at the end where children played. I was in awe. I ate a morning bun, which was sticky sweet and flaky with that hint of cinnamon. Then, I was seduced by the snow cones which are all organic or natural and made with ice shaved so thin that it doesn't have that annoying hardness to it. Best flavors in my opinion include mango, peach and cherry. Okay, so I didn't say that breakfast there was the healthiest thing ever, but it could be. I passed three completely vegan and healthy booths where they sold interesting breakfast items and things to take home. I bought some essence of Bay leaf, which not only smells good, but apparently has some interesting medicinal properties.
The family I was staying with stocked up on fresh fruit and vegetables and some hummus dip. I helped them by sampling the various foods to decide on the sweetest peaches. :)
We hiked the mountain trails, walked and shopped-- an enjoyable excercise. That night we steamed the bok chok, tossed the salad with fresh tomatoes and pinenuts and enjoyed our salmon.

I am on steroids and vicodin (still recovering from my unfortunate Poison Oak case) and ready for my train ride to San Fransisco. I am really excited and not just because I love train rides. I am taking Amtrak and hope that it will be a comfortable journey and that I can catch up some reading, enjoy my packed lunch and see the scenery. The biggest excitement of course is San Fransisco, birthplace and favorite city. I am totally going to blog about my adventures and I will also be giving updates on a decision I made kind of spur of the moment and may not have been such a good idea: dying my hair. And the color?
Blond! .... okay so this is a rather risky move. Not only do I have a lackluster dishwater blond hair color right now, but I have dark caterpillar eyebrows and if I have learned anything from certain celebrities with bushy eyebrows, sometimes brunnette is just the way to go.
Maybe if I am feeling generous and not too embarrassed I will even have pics. I am using a L'Oreal Paris Blond 02. we will see...

So, the worst of all horibble things finally happened to me... again. I got POISON OAK. I hate this stuff so much and am always careful, but of course the thing I was not thinking of gave it to me. My little beagle loves to run around in the bushes behind our house. And of course she has protective fur that keeps her from coming into contact with the evil stuff. My brother has to take the SAT's next year so I have been trying to help him study. I was a lot more freaked out about the whole thing when I was going through the process than he seems to be. By the time I took the National Merit Qualifying test my Jr year, I had already taken the PSATs two official times and one unofficial time. All those times, my score hovered around a 210. As I got a perfect score on the Math Section, you can imagine how abysmal the verbal sections were for me. I am an avid reader and I love to learn new words, but the format of the test was confusing to me and I often felt rushed and flustered when taking it.
At the beginning of my Jr. year, I borrowed some books from the library that helped me not only to buld my vocabulary, but also to understand how to approach words I didn't know the meaning of. It is far more difficult to learn every word in the English language than it is to learn how to make educated guesses. (if you really want to see the kinds of words, check out this page: http://www.freevocabulary.com/) In the end, the SAT is really just another multiple choice test and it can be learned to some extent. The most important thing I did was to sign up for the SAT question of the day and word of the day at collegeboard.com. This is important because its a small task I could do every day to get me thinking in the way of the SAT and it wasn't an overwhelming commitment by any means.
I went into the PSAT only with this practice and improved my score so much that I actually won a National Merit Scholarship. Even if you don't choose to go to a school that offers a full ride to these scholars, you still win $2500 which at least covers all the collegeboard tests and applications you will ever fill out. I live in California and my score was a 225 and I actually completely messed up the math section. I was unbearably proud that math was my lowest score because that meant that I had been careless in that section, but that all the other studying had paid off.
My next step before taking the SATs was to take practiced timed tests with my friends about once a week. By this time, I was used to the test, but still had problems with the time limits when it came to reading the passages. Practicing in this way made me learn more about my own pace and how long I should spend on a hard question before skipping it. I also became more in tune with the questions themselves. After a while, you just know which concept is being tested in a certain question and therefore, it is easier to find the answer.
When I took the SAT my junior year, it was my first official time taking it. I scored near perfect on the multiple choice. However, my essay score was far below what someone who loves to write and got a 5 on the AP English test should get. I hadn't practiced the essay section because I was over confident that I would do well on it. Without a score on essay writing from the PSAT and no one to score me on the practice tests, I assumed that I would do fine. However, I had not realized that I had a tendency to need more than 25 minutes to develop an essay and was only in my 3rd paragraph when time was called. The SAT essay section does not care about the beauty of your prose. It cares about beginning, conclusion, length, hand-writing, spelling, and examples. You can pull these examples out of your butt if you want, just give them a story. I have heard people quote non-existant figures and cite battles that never happened who got perfect scores. The essay is a fake piece of plaster. If you get a high score and are an honest writer, you are surely not proud of it. However, it is another style you have to learn and had I been severely upset with my score i probably would have timed myself with several lame prompts such as "What does freedom mean to the USA" or "Is lying a sign of cowardice" in which I might have referrenced P. R. Reynolds and his heroic work as a spy during the cold war where he lied for 10 years and was therefore a hero. (made him up, in case you were wondering)
Anyway, if you are really lacking discipline, there are always ways you can be forced to study
Peterson's Online Course for the SAT. To be honest, the SAT is really not such a big deal as it once was because now everyone just studies for it and does really well. What was once an aptitude test is now just an excuse for the collegeboard and various other prep companies to squeeze money out of scared students and their overbearing parents, but that doesn't mean that you want to fight the power and be the only one to walk into the test unprepared. I admit that I did buy the prep book and do the online work, but like I said, my scholarship and college acceptance make it all worth it. When I was little, I heard the word cashmere and thought it was some unnatainable fabric that only the rich and powerful could have. Actually, cashmere is not so hard to come by, but it is as wonderful as I thought it would be. I got my first cashmere sweater a couple years ago. I bought it with my own money and it was a beautiful green color. It was so soft that I braved my own clumsy nature to wear it everywhere. Of course, it is very annoying to clean because you can't just dump it in the laundry. Still, I got it for $30-marked down from $180. It was even better to me because I got such an amazing deal on it. Of course, it isn't the same quality that all those rich guys wear, but I am sure I love it more. I am on the hunt for a new one, not because I plan on getting rid of this one, but because I want another one in a different color. I have been watching the sales and finally one is here. My job search this summer was way more difficult than I had anticipated. My initial strategy had been to just walk into some shops along main street and give them my resume, but the managers just told me they had already filled the jobs and that was only if I even got to speak with the manager. I admit, some of the are BIZARRE. for instance one link led me directly to someone's hotmail inbox and seriously? who wants to let the rest of the world into their private mailboxes? some of the other strange things included:
1. a website that shows you how to fold a shirt in this bizarre japanese way and how to do different knots on a tie.
2. an travel website that lets you zoom in on the capitals.
3. a travel website that instructs poor teens like myself how we might backpack tour europe on $25 a day.
4. despair.com which has some of the funniest apparel ever. Including things for the sarcastic, pessimistic, anarchist, cynical etc. Their collection of shot glasses is great. (p/s you don't go to this website necessarily to buy, just look to be entertained!)
