Online TV July 09

Two under advertised shows that are really great because they are different than the typical Hollywood movies.

Merlin is interesting, has British charm and a unique twist on TV. The actors are cute and their flaws seem real which makes the show more interesting. King Arthur's attitude and Merlin's annoyance bring a conflict that is very entertaining. Only flaws are the technical aspects that make any Hollywood show such as the lighting and filming. The effects are more than adequate for a tv series.

Dorm life is amazing in that an entire season is filmed in under 25 days, is broadcasted only online and is absolutely hilarious and not forced. It is not lost on me that many of the characters and plots resemble The Office's, but as both of these are Mockumentries and based on read life it makes sense that they would share some overlapping cliches or archetypes. Interestingly, Dwight and Michael from the Office seem to be shared by RA Marshall and artsy film buff (crazy and self-involved guy) Josh. Also, Abigail, one of my favorite characters, has Dwight's bizarre religious farm culture. I only wish she would come out of her shell and join the rest of the floor a little more because I think she is an adorable girl and she and Gopher are so sweet. Which brings me to my next point: Gopher. He is not only the talented writer of the show, but the cutest guy not on Television. His friendship with Shane is one of the most authentic "brotherhoods" I have seen. Mike is the show's usual protagonist. Most likely, the most easy going and level headed along with love interest Brit, he has a semi-crisis during the first two seasons that some college students can really relate to. Depressed, feeling like a fish out of water, he loses touch with himself and his friend. He makes a recovery after several embarrassing episodes and is now fun mike once again. Anyway, as I am preparing for college I find this show incredibly fun and uplifting. Danny B, Courtney, Steph and the rest all make me a little more confident that anyone can belong to a great group and have an amazing time.
